MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 30th August, 2018) At least six members of the Islamic State terrorist group (IS, banned in Russia), including IS leader Yasir Khurasani, were killed in airstrikes carried out by the US-led forces in the country's eastern Nangarhar province, local media reported Thursday, citing the Afghan military.

The airstrikes were conducted by drones in Wazir Tangi area of Khogyani district, the Khaama Press news agency reported. The US-led forces also destroyed a DShK heavy machine gun belonging to IS.

Afghanistan has been experiencing significant political, social and security-related instability for decades, as various terrorist organizations continue to stage attacks against civilian and military targets.

The United States and its allies launched a military operation in Afghanistan in 2001 following the 9/11 terror attacks. The mission in Afghanistan ended on December 28, 2014. On January 1, 2015, NATO announced its new mission in the country, called Resolute Support, to train and assist Afghan security forces.
