US, North Korea Should Continue Denuclearization Efforts Amid Bilateral Tensions - Beijing

The United States and North Korea should stick to political settlement of the Korean peninsula denuclearization issue and deepen mutual political confidence amid their bilateral tensions, Chinese Foreign Ministry's Spokesperson Hua Chunying said on Wednesday.

BEIJING (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 29th August, 2018) The United States and North Korea should stick to political settlement of the Korean peninsula denuclearization issue and deepen mutual political confidence amid their bilateral tensions, Chinese Foreign Ministry's Spokesperson Hua Chunying said on Wednesday.

"Given the circumstances, we believe that the United States and North Korea should strictly adhere to the political settlement, continue cooperation, build up mutual political trust and make positive efforts for promoting denuclearization and political settlement to the issue," Hua said at a briefing.

She added that China stood for denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and establishment of a peace mechanism for settlement.

"Denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, and securing of peace and stability remain the aspiration that all the parties share," Hua said.

The situation on the Korean peninsula has improved over the last months, with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un holding two summits with his South Korean counterpart in Spring, and signing an agreement, envisaging Pyongang's denuclearization in exchange for US-South Korean military drills freeze and eventual US sanctions relief, with US President Donald Trump on June 12.

However, US-North Korean bilateral relations have recently deteriorated, as Trump announced on August 24 that he had asked US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to cancel his trip to North Korea over lack of progress in the denuclearization talks. Trump also accused China of not contributing to the denuclearization issue due to its trade dispute with the United States.

Trump's decision was reportedly prompted by a "belligerent" letter that Pompeo received on August 24 from Kim Yong Chol, vice chairman of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party.
