Ukrainian Envoy to UN Warns Russia of 'Unpleasant Surprises' at UNGA in September

Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Volodymyr Yelchenko said on Tuesday that Russia would be confronted with several "unpleasant surprises," related to Crimea and armed conflict in Ukraine's Donbas, at the upcoming UN General Assembly (UNGA) session in late September.

KIEV (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th August, 2018) Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Volodymyr Yelchenko said on Tuesday that Russia would be confronted with several "unpleasant surprises," related to Crimea and armed conflict in Ukraine's Donbas, at the upcoming UN General Assembly (UNGA) session in late September.

"A number of very unpleasant surprises are awaiting it [Russia at the UNGA], related to Crimea and Donbas," Yelchenko told a briefing, aired by Ukrainian tv channels.

In early August, Poroshenko asked Ukrainian diplomats to draft a new resolution on the status of the Crimean peninsula that would later be submitted to the UNGA.

In December 2017, the UN General Assembly voted on a Kiev-sponsored resolution condemning the human rights situation in Crimea, which was supported by 70 countries, with 26 voting against and another 76 abstaining.

Crimea rejoined Russia in 2014, when some 96 percent of the peninsula's residents voted in favor of the move in a referendum. The reunification has not been recognized neither by Kiev nor the majority of Western countries. Russia has repeatedly said the vote was held in compliance with international law.
