Iran Expects JCPOA Parties to Boost Efforts for Saving Deal After US Exit - President

Tehran expects other signatories of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal, to propel their efforts to save the deal, now that the United States has withdrawn from the multilateral accord, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron on Monday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th August, 2018) Tehran expects other signatories of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal, to propel their efforts to save the deal, now that the United States has withdrawn from the multilateral accord, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron on Monday.

The two leaders held a phone conversation earlier in the day.

"Iran has lived up to all its obligations stated in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and with regard to US' unilateral withdrawal from the deal, the other parties to it are expected to boost efforts and transparency for saving the deal," Rouhani said, as quoted on the presidential website.

According to Rouhani, Iran wants the deal "to survive," but will "consider other measures" if Europe does not seek securing "financial and monetary channels, oil, insurance and transportation" in the near future.

In turn, Macron said that France was making every effort to save the deal and remained committed to it. He added that the signatories were "discussing different commercial and financial mechanisms in this regard."

Following US withdrawal from the JCPOA and consequent reinstatement of previously lifted sanctions against Iran, other signatories China, France, Germany, Iran, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the European Union have repeatedly voiced their commitment to the deal. The European Union responded to the US move by introducing its Blocking Statute, protecting the interests of EU companies operating in Iran.
