South Ossetias Capital Faces Power Blackout Due to Fire at Substation - Authorities

The large part of the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali was hit with power outage on Saturday due to the outbreak of fire at the electrical substation, the Emergencies Ministry told Sputnik.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th August, 2018) The large part of the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali was hit with power outage on Saturday due to the outbreak of fire at the electrical substation, the Emergencies Ministry told Sputnik.

According to preliminary data, the grass around the ['Shanghai'] substation caught fire and it has spread to the roof. In order to extinguish it, it was necessary to turn off the electricity, the ministry said.

The city has been left without power for over 20 minutes on the eve of 10-year anniversary of Russia's recognition of South Ossetia's independence, according to the authorities.

The breakaway republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia declared independence from Georgia in the early 1990s. Tbilisi still considers the republics part of its territory.

On August 7, 2008, Georgia launched a military offensive against its breakaway region of South Ossetia and then partially destroyed Tskhinvali. Russia sent troops to South Ossetia in an attempt to protect local residents, many of whom were Russian nationals. After five days of hostilities, Russia managed to expel Georgian troops from the partially-recognized republic.
