(Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th August, 2018) The US State Department sent out a security alert warning about disruptions in Columbia during Sundays anti-corruption referendum.
"Security Alert: A nationwide referendum on anti-corruption measures is scheduled for Sunday 8/26," the tweet said on Friday. "Potential for demonstrations, traffic disruptions and visible police presence. There will be road closures throughout Bogota and other cities on 8/26."
Colombians go to the polls on Sunday to vote on seven anti-corruption measures including mandatory jail sentences for corruption, greater budget transparency, term limits, and salary reductions, according to the Americas Quarterly.
The corruption allegedly has costs the country some $17 billion a year, roughly 5.3 percent of the countrys GDP. Last fall, the Comptroller General announced that Colombian officials had embezzled more than $13 billion from regional budgets.
