Top Chilean Court Rules To Seize $1.6Mln Of Pinochet Assets

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th August, 2018) Chiles Supreme Court ruled on Friday to jail three retired officers for stealing public funds and seize $1.6 million worth of assets belonging to deceased military dictator Augusto Pinochet.

The general was charged in 2005 with dodging taxes by conducting financial operations with millions of Dollars, in a case that involved a US-based Riggs Bank.

A Chilean court decided earlier to give millions back to Pinochets surviving relatives, but the top court has now overturned that ruling in the judgment, published on the official legal portal.

The court sentenced officers Gabriel Vergara Cifuentes, Juan Ricardo Mac-Lean Vergara and Eugenio Castillo Cadiz to four years in prison for their role in misappropriating public funds.

Pinochet led a coup in 1973 that deposed the elected government, and ruled Chile until 1990. He died under house arrest in 2006, although he was never persecuted for political killings and disappearances of thousands of people under his regime.
