New Bill Seeks To Hold US Military Accountable For PFAS Chemicals Contamination - Senators

(Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th August, 2018) New legislation being introduced into the Senate seeks to hold Federal agencies including the US armed forces accountable for addressing PFAS, or polyfluoroalkyl chemical contamination across the United States, three senators said in a press release.

"US Senators Gary Peters, Debbie Stabenow and Marco Rubio introduced bipartisan legislation to hold federal agencies accountable for addressing contamination from per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) at military bases across the country," the release from Peters office said on Friday.

The PFAS Accountability Act sets clear deadlines and reporting requirements for cleaning up the chemicals contamination at all federal facilities across the country, including active and decommissioned military bases, and mandates greater transparency, the release explained.

"Families across Michigan are being exposed to PFAS-contaminated water and soil and the federal agencies that caused the problem should be working aggressively to fix it. Communities affected by this contamination need government accountability now more than ever," Peters said in the release.

Earlier this year, the senators secured funding to clean up contamination at active and decommissioned military bases. But for much of the federal money to be used to address the issue, federal agencies, including the Department of Defense, must make cooperative agreements with states, the release said.
