No Meeting Expected With North Koreas Kim During Pompeos Visit - State Dept.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 24th August, 2018) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is not scheduled or expected to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his visit to the country next week, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a press briefing on Thursday.

"We dont have that scheduled, we have no expectations of meeting with Chairman Kim, that is not a part of this trip," Nauert told reporters.

Pompeo will visit North Korea next week with Steve Biegun, who was on Thursday appointed as the US Special Representative for North Korea. Biegun will direct US policy toward North Korea and oversee the denuclearization process.

Nauert said Biegun was chosen to serve as the US representative for North Korea because he has spent time in the region dealing with Asian nations during his time as Ford Motor Companys head of international relations.

On June 12, Trump and Kim met in Singapore, where they reached an agreement that stipulates North Korea will denuclearize in exchange for a freeze of the US-South Korean military drills and potential sanctions relief. No concrete time frame was announced for achieving these goals.
