WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd August, 2018) US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo and Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi discussed ways to resolve the ongoing conflict in Syria, State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a readout of a meeting between the two top diplomats in Washington on Wednesday.
"The Secretary and Foreign Minister Safadi discussed regional developments, including efforts to bring peace and stability to Syria and the broader middle East," Nauert said. "Secretary Pompeo also thanked the Foreign Minister for Jordans continued role in helping to alleviate humanitarian suffering in southern Syria."
Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with the government forces fighting against numerous opposition groups and terrorist organizations.
The United States and its allies have been engaged in a military operation against terrorists in Syria since 2014. However, the United States' operations in Syria have been conducted without the authorization of the Syrian government or the United Nations Security Council.
