US Sanctions Against Iran Unjust, Harmful - UN Special Rapporteur

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd August, 2018) UN Special Rapporteur Idriss Jazairy slammed on Wednesday US sanctions against Iran as unfair and harmful.

In May, US President Donald Trump said that the United States would exit the Iran nuclear deal, which stipulated that Tehran ensured the peaceful nature of its missile program in exchange for the gradual easing of international sanctions. Other parties to the agreement have denounced the US move and committed themselves to preserving the deal.

"The reimposition of sanctions against Iran after the unilateral withdrawal of the United States from the Iran nuclear deal lays bare the illegitimacy of this action These unjust and harmful sanctions are destroying the economy and Currency of Iran, driving millions of people into poverty and making imported goods unaffordable," Jazairy said, as quoted in the UN press release.

The rapporteur welcomed the efforts of the European Union in trying to protect Iran from the US sanctions.

"I am grateful for the efforts of the European Union in tackling this injustice, both through diplomatic efforts and through legislation to protect European companies from American sanctions. I sincerely hope that the international community can come together to see that the world does not become a battleground for generalized economic war," Jazairy said.

Iran is currently facing the reintroduction of US sanctions. Part of the restrictions went into force earlier this month, while the second portion is expected to take effect in the fall.

On Tuesday, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said that Europe needed to boost its autonomy by setting up payment systems independent from the United States and to develop its own equivalent of the SWIFT system to shield its companies from US sanctions against Iran. He stressed that Europe considered the withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Iran a mistake, but was ready to work with the United States.
