ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-June 25th, 2026) The mourning processions and religious gatherings marking the 9th of Muharram were held across Pakistan on Thursday under heightened security arrangements, with authorities deploying tens of thousands of personnel to ensure the peaceful observance of the occasion.
Processions and majalis were organised in major cities, including Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Jhang, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur and Hangu. Security measures were strengthened along procession routes, while sabeels were set up at various locations to facilitate mourners.
In Punjab, the main Zuljanah procession in Lahore began from Islampura, while another major procession started from Pando Street and is scheduled to conclude at Khaima-e-Sadaat.
According to Punjab Police, 1,697 mourning processions and 3,869 majalis are being held across the province. These include 208 highly sensitive processions and 337 majalis classified under the highest security category.
Inspector General of Punjab Police said more than 70,000 police officers and personnel had been deployed across the province. Security monitoring is being carried out through CCTV surveillance, walk-through gates, metal detectors and other modern screening equipment.
Authorities have also deployed snipers at key locations, while plain-clothes commandos are accompanying major processions. Restrictions on pillion riding remain in force, with exemptions for women, senior citizens and law enforcement personnel.
In Karachi, the central majlis was held at Nishtar Park, followed by the main procession, which is set to proceed along its traditional route before concluding at Hussainia Iranian in Kharadar.
More than 5,000 police personnel, supported by Rangers, have been deployed for security duties in the city. mobile phone services have been suspended in areas surrounding the procession route, while roads, markets and streets linked to the route have been sealed with containers.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, authorities reported strict security measures for Muharram events. More than 32,000 security personnel have been deployed across Balochistan, while processions in Hangu and other districts continued under tight security.
In the Federal capital, a procession was scheduled to emerge from Imambargah Isna Ashari in G-6 as part of the 9th Muharram observances.
