SP City Asif Ghafoor says comprehensive security measures had been put in place to safeguard mourners participating in processions and religious gatherings
QUETTA: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-June 25th, 2026) Authorities in Quetta have finalized extensive security arrangements to ensure the peaceful observance of Muharram-ul-Haram, with mobile phone services set to remain suspended in key urban areas on the 9th and 10th of Muharram.
Speaking to reporters, SP City Asif Ghafoor said comprehensive security measures had been put in place to safeguard mourners participating in processions and religious gatherings. He said mobile phone signals would be shut down along procession routes, sensitive locations and major urban areas as a precautionary measure against potential security threats.
The police officer said a large number of security personnel would be deployed across the city, while strict monitoring would be carried out at important religious sites and other sensitive points. He urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to help maintain peace during the holy days.
As part of the security plan, authorities have also decided to impose a ban on pillion riding, restrict the display and carrying of weapons, and implement traffic diversion plans in various parts of the city.
Additional police personnel will be stationed in sensitive areas, including Sariab Road, Jinnah Town, City Road, Liaquat Road and other locations identified by security agencies. Surveillance and patrolling have also been enhanced to ensure public safety.
According to officials, several coordination meetings have been held involving representatives of the provincial government, police, intelligence agencies and other relevant departments to review security arrangements and address potential challenges.
SP City Asif Ghafoor said the objective of the measures was to ensure that Muharram processions and gatherings are held in a peaceful and secure environment.
Many residents have welcomed the security arrangements despite the temporary inconvenience caused by the suspension of mobile services. Citizens said public safety should remain the top priority during Muharram.
The police have assured the public that essential emergency services, including ambulance, fire brigade and police helplines, will remain fully operational. Authorities have also urged citizens to immediately report any suspicious activity to law enforcement agencies.
