WHO warns of growing antibiotic resistance

The World Health Organization has expressed deep concern over the growing resistance to antibiotics, warning that drug-resistant infections could become the world’s leading cause of death by 2050.

GENEVA: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-Oct,17, 2025) The World Health Organization (WHO) has voiced serious concern over the rapidly increasing global resistance to antibiotics, describing it as one of the gravest public health threats of modern times.

According to the WHO’s latest report, the overuse and misuse of antibiotics have led to the emergence of bacteria resistant to common medicines, making treatments increasingly ineffective.

These drug-resistant bacteria, often referred to as “superbugs,” not only complicate medical treatments but are also responsible for millions of deaths worldwide each year.

The United Nations has warned that without urgent action, antibiotic-resistant infections could become the leading cause of death globally by 2050.

The WHO has urged all countries to curb the misuse of antibiotics, enhance surveillance of bacterial infections, and invest jointly in research and development of new antibiotics to combat the growing threat.
