Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi says project will be part of $6.8 billion Main Line-1 (ML-1) up gradation, spanning 1,215 kilometers from Karachi to Peshawar
ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-August 25th, 2025) Pakistan Railways has announced plans to launch a high-speed bullet train between Karachi and Lahore by 2030 as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
A Radio Pakistan report quoting Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi said that the project will be part of the $6.8 billion Main Line-1 (ML-1) up gradation, spanning 1,215 kilometers from Karachi to Peshawar.
The initiative will be carried out with Chinese assistance and will also involve China Railway Construction Corporation.
The proposed bullet train will operate at a speed of 250 kilometers per hour, with stops at Hyderabad, Multan and Sahiwal.
Under the project, the double-track railway line will be upgraded, new bridges will be constructed, and a modern signaling system will be installed.
The announcement comes as the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has also committed $2 billion for the up gradation of the Karachi-Rohri railway track, a parallel development aimed at modernizing Pakistan’s railway infrastructure.
If completed as planned, the Karachi-Lahore bullet train will mark a significant milestone in Pakistan’s transportation network, cutting travel time drastically between the two major cities.
