Flour mills strike persists over Withholding Tax issue

Asim Raza, Chairman of the Pakistan Flour Mills Association, asserted that their demand for the removal of the withholding tax is justified, emphasizing that mill owners should not be burdened with acting as tax agents.

LAHORE: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-July 12nd, 2024) The ongoing strike by flour mill owners, protesting the withholding tax, has reached its second day.

Asim Raza, Chairman of the Pakistan Flour Mills Association, asserted that their demand for the removal of the withholding tax is justified, emphasizing that mill owners should not be burdened with acting as tax agents.

Raza also pointed out that there has been no attempt from either the government or the Federal board of Revenue (FBR) to engage in discussions regarding their concerns.

Flour mill owners in major cities, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Multan, Bahawalpur, Sukkur, Rohri, and Hyderabad, have joined the strike. Consequently, the delivery of flour from these mills to local markets has been entirely disrupted.

The market sources have warned that without successful negotiations, there could be a nationwide shortage of flour.

The mill owners remain steadfast in their protest, declaring they will continue until their demands are addressed.
