Tehran Urges EU to Be More Serious About Saving Iran Nuclear Deal - Foreign Ministry

Tehran urges the European Union to take a more serious approach toward saving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal, now that the United States has withdrawn from the multilateral accord, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi said Monday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th August, 2018) Tehran urges the European Union to take a more serious approach toward saving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal, now that the United States has withdrawn from the multilateral accord, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi said Monday.

On August 7, the United States reimposed its first round of sanctions, previously lifted under the JCPOA, three months after its withdrawal announcement. The sanctions targeted various transactions and trade activities with Iran; another wave of US sanctions on Irans energy sector is expected to be reinstated in November. The European Union, which is also a party to the agreement, is currently working on an economic package to save the deal.

"We insist European countries to make efforts more seriously and swiftly," Qassemi said, as quoted by the Islamic Republic news Agency.

European officials have been criticizing the extraterritorial nature of US sanctions. To cope with the effect of the restrictions on EU companies working with Iran, the bloc introduced legislation shielding these firms from the measures.

The JCPOA was signed in 2015 by Iran, the European Union and the P5+1 group of countries China, Germany, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The deal stipulated the gradual lifting of anti-Iran sanctions in exchange for Tehran maintaining the peaceful nature of its nuclear program.
