German, Algerian Foreign Ministers To Discuss Libya During Meeting On Thursday - Algiers

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd January, 2020) Algerian Foreign Minister Sabri Boukadoum will discuss with his German counterpart, Heiko Maas, the situation in Libya during their upcoming talks, the Algerian Foreign Ministry said in a press release on Wednesday.

According to the press release, Maas will pay a visit to Algeria on Thursday. The foreign ministers are set to address bilateral cooperation in various areas, including economy and investment.

"This trip will also provide an opportunity for a broad exchange of views on key regional and international issues, including the situation in Libya," the ministry said.

After the ouster and assassination of then-Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, the country was plunged into political turmoil. Today, Libya is divided between two centers of power an elected parliament in the country's east, supported by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar's Libyan National Army (LNA), and the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) in the west.

As a response to tensions that escalated in Libya last year amid LNA's operation to retake Tripoli where GNA is seated, Berlin on Sunday hosted an international conference featuring a number of countries and organizations, including Russia, Turkey, Egypt, the United States, the European Union and the African Union. The participants called on the United Nations to facilitate ceasefire talks and urged the Security Council to impose sanctions on those who would breach the truce agreement.
