Washington Sues Trump Inauguration Committee Over Alleged Abuse of Funds - Filing

The city of Washington is suing the Trump inauguration committee for allegedly abusing nonprofit funds at the Trump Hotel for inaugural events in January 2017, according to a court filing on Wednesday

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd January, 2020) The city of Washington is suing the Trump inauguration committee for allegedly abusing nonprofit funds at the Trump Hotel for inaugural events in January 2017, according to a court filing on Wednesday.

"Plaintiff, the District of Columbia, through its Attorney General, brings this action against Defendants Trump Organization LLC and Trump Old Post Office LLC d/b/a Trump International Hotel Washington, DC, and the 58th Presidential Inaugural Committee to obtain a constructive trust and other equitable relief over nonprofit funds that the PIC, a nonprofit 2 corporation, improperly wasted by grossly overpaying the Defendant Trump Entities for use of event space at the Trump Hotel for certain Inaugural events," the filing said.

Washington's Attorney General Karl Racine argues in the lawsuit that the Trump inauguration committee violated the city's law when it spent about $1 million of charitable funds in "overpayment" for the use of space at the Trump hotel for inaugural events.

Racine said the Trump inauguration committee was required to spend its funds in ways that benefited the public instead of serving the private benefit for the Trump entities.

Racine also said in the lawsuit that the amount of money the Trump inauguration committee paid to the Trump Hotel - at least $1.03 million - was "unfair, unreasonable and unjustified."

The plaintiff asked the court to impose a trust over the funds used by the Trump entities for inaugural events as well as to order the funds be restored and given to a proper charitable organization "dedicated to promoting civic engagement."

The court is also recommended to order any other relief it determines necessary in the case.
