MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd January, 2020) Eight Nigerian servicemen have been killed and five more sustained injuries in an attack by Boko Haram (a part of the Islamic State terrorist group, banned in Russia) on a military patrol in the northern state of Borno, national media reported on Wednesday, citing military sources.

The militants ambushed the patrol on Tuesday evening in Mainok village, some 37 miles from the capital of Borno state, according to the Premium Times newspaper. Two servicemen are still missing as a result.

In addition, two gun trucks and three pieces of anti-aircraft weapons are unaccounted for in the wake of the attack. The military yet managed to kill a Boko Haram militant and capture an assault rifle from the attackers.

Since 2009, Nigeria has been plagued by attacks and kidnappings by the Islamist group Boko Haram, which seeks to eliminate the Western system of education and establish Sharia law across Nigeria. In March 2015, the group pledged allegiance to the Islamic State terror group.

Over the past few days, Borno, where the group is especially active, has seen a string of violent attacks. On Saturday, for instance, militants attacked a humanitarian facility where five United Nations staff were staying. The workers managed to escape unharmed but an entire section of the facility was burnt down.
