MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th October, 2019) The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is particularly concerned about the Sahel region and Lake Chad area in Africa, ICRC President Peter Maurer told Sputnik in an interview.

"In terms of regions I am concerned about the Sahel and the Lake Chad region because of the impact of climate change on violence because of the extenuation of internal conflict dynamics by external jihadi fighters coming from many other places in the world. I am concerned about the big population displacements in these regions," Maurer said, adding that there were "always particular concerns for some of the regions."

The particularity of the situation in Africa is that "protracted conflicts" are often involved, Maurer said.

"What do I mean by long-term protracted conflicts? Conflicts in which you don't have only violence between two, or three, or four parties violence and its impact are combined in Africa with underdevelopment, with extenuating conflict through climate change, with the ill functioning of institutions in many places. So what the World Bank once called 'states of fragility' is a good description of what we are confronted with on the African continent," Maurer said.

According to the ICRC president, "humanitarian work in Africa needs to build on linking in a better way the short-term and the long-term, the individual protection and the structural systemic protection work or as some say to link humanitarian and development action."
