An Interpol operation carried out in six countries has uncovered over a dozen terrorist suspects who had traveled across the Mediterranean Sea to Europe, according to a statement from the international police organization released on Thursday

PARIS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 19th September, 2019) An Interpol operation carried out in six countries has uncovered over a dozen terrorist suspects who had traveled across the Mediterranean Sea to Europe, according to a statement from the international police organization released on Thursday.

"A maritime border operation coordinated by INTERPOL has detected more than a dozen suspected foreign terrorist fighters (FTFs) travelling across the Mediterranean," the statement said.

The operation, dubbed Neptune II, was conducted in Algeria, Spain, France, Italy, Morocco, and Tunisia from July 24-September 8. It was aimed at detecting threats posed by suspected foreign terrorist fighters using maritime routes between North Africa and southern Europe during the tourist season.

The investigators also worked on uncovering criminal networks involved in the trafficking of people, migrants, weapons and drugs.

The operation resulted in at least 31 active investigative leads, including those related to terrorist suspects.
