US Assistant Secretary For Africa Travels To Sudan To Urge Talks Resumption - State Dept.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th June, 2019) Tibor Nagy, the top US diplomat dealing with Africa, will fly out for a four-nation tour this week to try and curb ongoing violence in Sudan and promote democracy across the continent, the Department of State said in a media note.

"Assistant Secretary for African Affairs Tibor Nagy will travel to Sudan, Ethiopia, Mozambique, and South Africa from June 12-23, 2019," the note said on Monday. "In Sudan, he will meet with members of the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) and the Transitional Military Council (TMC)."

In Sudan, Nagy will urge the end of attacks against civilians and urge conflicting forces to try and cooperate to develop a favorable atmosphere in which talks could resume between the FFC and TMC, the readout said.

In Ethiopia, Nagy "will meet with African Union representatives and Ethiopian government officials to discuss the situation in Sudan and efforts to support a political solution," the readout said.

On April 10, a military coup toppled-President Omar Bashir after almost 30 years in power and since then FFC supporters have called on the army to turn over power to civilians. On June 3, the army attacked a camp of protesters in Khartoum, reportedly killing scores of them.

In South Africa, Nagy will meet with senior officials to boost bilateral trade and investment and strengthen security cooperation while seeking to advance democracy and human rights. Then he will take part in the US-Africa business Summit in Maputo, Mozambique, the readout said.
