Rosatom To Provide All Slovakia's Nuclear Power Units With Nuclear Fuel Until 2026

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 05th June, 2019) Russian TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom and Slovakia's national electricity generating company Slovenske elektrarne signed on Wednesday an agreement, saying that Moscow would supply nuclear fuel to both Slovakia's nuclear power plants for 2022-2026, with the possibility of extension until 2030, a statement from TVEL said.

"TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom and the power generating company in Slovakia Slovenske elektrarne a.s. have signed contractual documents on the supply of nuclear fuel to nuclear power plants in Slovakia for 2022-2026 with the possibility of the contract extension to 2030," the statement from TVEL said.

The documents were signed in the Russian capital in the presence of Russian Prime Ministers Dmitry Medvedev and his Slovak counterpart, Peter Pellegrini.

Russia will deliver nuclear fuel to four operational power units with VVER-440 reactors at Bohunice Nuclear Power Plant and Mochovce Nuclear Power Plant as well as to two units under construction at Mochovce.

"Rosatom fuel division has unique experience and expertise in production of nuclear fuel for VVER-440 reactors in compliance with individual customer requirements. According to the signed agreements, TVEL JSC, together with Slovak specialists, will optimize the fuel cycle strategy of the Slovak NPPs in order to improve their economic efficiency," Natalia Nikipelova, President of TVEL JSC, said.

Branislav Strycek, Chairman of the board of Directors and General Director of Slovenske elektrarne, hailed the signing of the agreement.

"I am glad that by signing this contract we have successfully completed the long and difficult process of selecting a supplier of nuclear fuel for our nuclear power plants in the next few years," he said.

Nuclear power plants in Slovakia generate about 15 million MWh, according to the data from Slovenske elektrarne. Nuclear plants represent about 55 percent of the electricity produced in the country.
