Peru Wants More Information On Venezuela Talks In Norway - Foreign Minister

UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th June, 2019) Lima would like to have more information about the Norway talks between Venezuela's government and the opposition to address the political crisis in the Latin American country, Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio told Sputnik.

Last week, the representatives of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and opposition leader Juan Guaido met for the second round of talks in the Norwegian capital of Oslo. However, the negotiations ended without any agreement.

"We don't know very much about the substance of the talks in Norway and we just follow the situation. We are observing very closely what is going on and we would like to have more information in order to have a position about that," Popolizio said on Monday.

It is very important, the minister added, to keep in mind that the Norway talks are not a dialogue proposed by the Lima Group or the International Group of Contact and that is why they are observing the situation.

Popolizio spoke with Sputnik after the International Contact Group on Venezuela and the Lima Group held a joint meeting in New York for the first time.

The government of Norway, which has been seeking to act as a mediator in the dialogue between the Venezuelan government and opposition, noted progress in the recent talks despite the inability to reach an agreement.

Venezuela has been in crisis since January when Guaido proclaimed himself interim president. In May, Guaido directly requested military assistance from the United States to launch operations against Venezuela in the wake of a failed coup attempt. Maduro has accused Guaido of being a US puppet who is trying to orchestrate a coup to control the country's natural resources.
