WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 03rd June, 2019) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Sabah al-Khaled al-Sabah discussed the need for a united Gulf Cooperation Council to address Iran's threats to the region, State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said on Monday.

"The Secretary and the Foreign Minister agreed on the importance of a united Gulf Cooperation Council in confronting all of the region's challenges, particularly Iranian threats to the Gulf," Ortagus said in a readout of Sunday's phone call between the two diplomats.

Pompeo also thanked the foreign minister for Kuwait's strong partnership with the US and discussed other important regional issues.

The United States has in recent weeks stepped up its forces in the middle East in what US National Security Adviser John Bolton has called a clear and unmistakable message to Iran. The new US deployments in the region include an aircraft carrier strike group, Patriot missiles, B-52 bombers and F-15 fighters, according to the Pentagon.
