Trump Plan To Impose Tariffs On Mexico Should Not Jeopardize USMCA - White House Aide

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st June, 2019) White House Adviser Kellyanne Conway told reporters that US President Donald Trump's plan to impose new tariffs on Mexico will not jeopardize the US-Mexico-Canada-Agreement (USMCA).

"It should not jeopardize USCMA... we are fully confident that USMCA could pass the House," Conway told reporters on Friday.

Conway added that tariffs are a good way to get a trading partner's attention. She said Mexico needs to do more to stop the US-bound migration surge coming through its country from Central America.

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard announced Friday that Mexican and US foreign ministers will meet in Washington on Wednesday for talks on the US tariffs on all Mexican imports.

On Thursday, Trump announced that a 5 percent import tax would be imposed on all Mexican goods starting June 10 until Mexico stops illegal migrants coming through its territory. The duty will increase 5 percent every month until it reaches 25 percent.
