Erdogan Tells Putin About Need To Stop Syrian Government Operations In Idlib - Statement

ANKARA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 31st May, 2019) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pointed out during the Thursday phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin the need to stop the Syrian government troops' operation in the rebel-held province of Idlib, the Turkish presidential office said.

"During the phone talks with Vladimir Putin our president stressed that the Syrian regime must stop attacks on civilians in the south part of Syria's Idlib in order to remove the high risk of migrations to our borders and switch to the political settlement process," the presidential office said in a statement.

In early May, terrorists increased the frequency of attacks on the Syrian provinces of Hama, Aleppo and Latakia. They have also been attempting to attack the positions of the Syrian army in the region. The government forces have responded by attacking terrorists in the province of Idlib. The Syrian forces are targeting depots, artillery positions and observation posts of the Nusra Front terrorist group (banned in Russia).

Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with the government forces fighting against numerous opposition groups as well as militant and terrorist organizations. Russia and Turkey, along with Iran, are guarantors of the ceasefire in Syria.
