UN Chief Appoints US Diplomat James Swan as Special Representative for Somalia

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday appointed US diplomat James Swan to serve as his special representative for Somalia and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia, the United Nations announced in a statement

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 30th May, 2019) United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday appointed US diplomat James Swan to serve as his special representative for Somalia and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia, the United Nations announced in a statement.

"United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today announced the appointment of James Swan of the United States as his Special Representative for Somalia and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM). He will succeed Nicholas Haysom of South Africa to whom the Secretary-General is deeply grateful for his dedicated service in UNSOM and Somalia at a challenging time," the statement said.

According to the statement, Swan held positions of the ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2013-2016, the US special representative for Somalia in 2011-2013, and served as the ambassador to Djibouti from 2008 to 2011.

The United Nations also announced on Thursday that Morocco's Najat Maalla M'jid was appointed by Guterres as his special representative on violence against children at the level of assistant secretary-general. Maalla M'jid will succeed Portugal's Marta Santos Pais on this position.
