Seoul Hopes For Russia's Help In Settling North Korean Nuclear Issue - Parliament Speaker

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 29th May, 2019) Seoul hopes that Russia will mobilize its experience in disarmament, and will utilize its long-established contacts with Pyongyang to resolve the nuclear issue of the Korean Peninsula, South Korea's parliament speaker Moon Hee-sang said Wednesday.

"We hope that Russia, as a country with experience in the field of disarmament and denuclearization, will play a constructive role in creating a favorable diplomatic climate for solving the nuclear problem on the Korean Peninsula by intensifying strategic communication with the United States, China, Japan and other countries in the region," Moon said speaking in the Russian parliament.

He noted that Russia traditionally had friendly relations with North Korea, understood its policy well and could hold a substantive dialogue with Pyongyang, expressing hope that Moscow would be able to convince North Korea to become a full member of the international community.

"I would like to wholeheartedly thank Russian President [Vladimir Putin] for emphasizing the [need for a] complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and for supporting the view that the problem should be solved exclusively by diplomatic means. I completely agree with him," Moon added.

Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met at the Far Eastern Federal University on Vladivostok's Russky Island in April. Putin has said he is satisfied with how the meeting went.

South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha said earlier in May that the summit helped move the peace settlement on the Korean Peninsula forward.
