Canada Supplies US With Nearly Half of Imported Oil - Energy Department

Nearly half of the oil imported by the United States came from Canada in 2018, while the United States was the second largest supplier of crude imported by Canada, the Energy Information Administration said in a report on Monday

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th May, 2019) Nearly half of the oil imported by the United States came from Canada in 2018, while the United States was the second largest supplier of crude imported by Canada, the Energy Information Administration said in a report on Monday.

"Crude oil imports from Canada accounted for 48 owexwbr of total US crude oil imports in 2018, averaging 3.7 million barrels per day (b/d), up from 3.5 million b/d in 2017," the report said. "In 2018, the value of US imports of Canadian crude oil also increased, reaching $61 billion, because of an increase in both oil prices and volume through the first three quarters of the year."

Meanwhile, Canada was the second-largest importer of energy from the United States in terms of trade value, behind only Mexico, the report said.

US crude oil exports to Canada are typically light, sweet grades that are shipped to the eastern part of the country, while most Canadian crude oil exports to the United States are heavy oil from oil sands in the western part of the country, according to the release.

Canada is the largest energy trading partner with the United States based on the combined value of energy exports and imports, the release said.
