BELGRADE (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th May, 2019) Shots were heard and a number of people were injured in the northern region of Kosovo, mainly populated by Serbs, where police launched an anti-smuggling operation, Serbian media reported on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic ordered full alert for Serbian troops after Kosovo police reportedly made several arrests in northern Kosovo. According to the latest media reports, 23 people were arrested, including Mikhail Krasnoschekov, a Russian employee of the UN Interim Administration Mission in the self-proclaimed republic.

The Serbian tv channel Prva reported that many people were injured and several cars damaged as a result of the shooting that occurred in the area.

Reacting to the situation in northern Kosovo, the Russian Foreign Ministry slammed the police operation and arrests, describing it as a provocation by Pristina aimed at pushing non-Albanian population out from the self-proclaimed republic.

Kosovo unilaterally proclaimed independence from Serbia on February 17, 2008. The self-proclaimed republic is recognized by over 100 UN member states. Serbia, as well as Russia, China, Israel, Iran, Spain, Greece and a number of other countries have not recognized Kosovar independence.
