Greece May Move Snap General Election From June 30 To July 7 - Reports

MAY 28 (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th May, 2019) Snap parliamentary elections in Greece, scheduled for June 30, may be delayed for a week because of the nationwide university entrance exams that will be held from June 6 to July 2, local media reported on Tuesday.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Monday that he intended to hold an early general election following the defeat of his Syriza party in the European Parliament vote. According to exit polls and preliminary results, the conservative opposition New Democracy (ND) party won 33.5 percent of the vote, while Tsipras's party received 25 percent. ND leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis has urged Tsipras to resign and called for early elections, saying that Greece needed a new government.

According to the Ekathimerini newspaper, the original June 30 date for the snap elections could be pushed back one week due to the fact that the majority of polling places will be located at schools, which will be busy holding exams at that time.

The current government's term expires in October.
