Iraqi Parliament Refutes Rumors of Baghdad Offering Mediation in US-Iran Tensions

Iraq has not offered mediation or any other initiatives to resolve the US-Iran conflict, the Iraqi parliament speaker's spokesman, Muhammad al-Halboussi Hamid Shaker, told Sputnik on Monday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th May, 2019) Iraq has not offered mediation or any other initiatives to resolve the US-Iran conflict, the Iraqi parliament speaker's spokesman, Muhammad al-Halboussi Hamid Shaker, told Sputnik on Monday.

On May 20, a source close to Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi told Sputnik that Iraq, Japan, Oman, Russia, Qatar and Switzerland were currently mediating the conflict between Washington and Tehran.

"Iraq has not offered any mediation or initiative to any of the sides. Iraq, being among the important poles of the region and the first state to suffer in any military escalation in the region, is concerned by the escalating tensions and, consequently, guided by its responsibility," Shaker said.

It is important for Iraq to try and stabilize the situation in the region, but Baghdad has not been offered to act as a mediator, the representative added.

Throughout May, Washington has increased its military buildup in the region amid growing tensions with Iran over the collapsing 2015 nuclear deal. The United States has deployed the Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, Patriot missile defense system and other military hardware in vicinity of Iran. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said that Iran does not intend to wage war with the United States but will continue to resist its pressure.
