Russia Supports Idea of Boosting SCO-CSTO Counterterrorism Cooperation - Lavrov

Moscow supports Kyrgyzstan's initiative to facilitate counterterrorism cooperation between the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd May, 2019) Moscow supports Kyrgyzstan's initiative to facilitate counterterrorism cooperation between the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek hosted a meeting of the SCO foreign ministers' council, followed by a CSTO ministerial meeting. Kyrgyzstan chairs both organizations this year.

"We share your views on the growing role of the CSTO and our coordination within the organization in light of the persisting challenges and threats in our common region, above all, the threat of terrorism. Therefore, I would like to confirm our support for Kyrgyzstan's initiative to establish anti-terrorism cooperation between SCO and CSTO," Lavrov said at a meeting with Kyrgyz President Sooronbay Jeenbekov.

The CSTO was established on the basis of the Collective Security Treaty, signed by members of the Commonwealth of Independent States in 1992. CSTO comprises Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan.

The SCO is an international intergovernmental organization consisting of eight member states: India, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
