ATHENS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd May, 2019) Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his Bulgarian counterpart, Boyko Borissov, attended on Wednesday the launch of the construction of a reverse gas pipeline between the two countries' natural gas pipeline networks.

"IGB [Gas Interconnector Greece - Bulgaria] will turn the Balkans into an energy hub ... Most of the gas in the IGB will come from TAP [Trans Adriatic Pipeline]. It is expected to start operating in 2020 and deliver natural gas from Azerbaijan to the European markets," Tsipras said at the launch ceremony, as aired by the Greek television.

According to the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy, the 112-mile-long trans-border pipeline will connect Greece's gas network in the Komotini area with Bulgaria's in Stara Zagora.

The pipeline's initial capacity is 3 billion cubic meters (160 million cubic feet).
