WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd May, 2019) The United States believes that Russia can play an important role in resolving the ongoing conflict in Syria, US Special Representative for Syria Engagement James Jeffrey said in a testimony before the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday."We believe that Russia can play an important role in resolving this conflict just as it played an important role in making it worse and that was the reason that Secretary [Mike] Pompeo went to Sochi and President [Vladimir] Putin met with him because President Putin also ... would like to find a solution to this conflict because it is a dangerous one for Russia," Jeffrey said.
A settlement in Syria is being discussed in several formats - in Nur-Sultan and in Geneva.
In addition, the Syrian National Dialogue Congress held in Sochi last year served as the first attempt to bring together a wide range of parties.
The main result of the meeting in Sochi was the decision to set up a Syrian Constitutional Committee that would work in Geneva. The Constitutional Committee would be tasked with preparing a constitutional reform.
The conflict in Syria has been ongoing since 2011, but in 2017 the focus shifted from anti-terrorist operations toward reaching a political settlement, return of refugees and reconstruction.
