MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd May, 2019) The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) will focus on delivering comprehensive, essential health care services to people in South Sudan this year, its senior official, Eva Svoboda, told Sputnik.

The government and rebel leaders in this East African country struck a peace deal in March to create a transitional government, ending a conflict that had claimed 400,000 lives.

"The signing of the latest peace agreement led to lower levels of fighting around the country overall, which has improved overall access. We do not have plans to open new hospitals per se, but we are moving into supporting more Primary health care. As of this year, we are focusing more on primary health care because we saw it as a big need," Svoboda said.

South Sudan is the medical aid charity's second largest operation globally, she added. It has a budget of $137 million for this year's programs covering health, mental health, water and habitats, as well as protection from and prevention of diseases.
