Russian Lunar Rover Will Be Capable Of Drilling Holes, Traveling 310 Miles - Scientist

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd May, 2019) The Russian lunar rover, which is scheduled to be sent to the Moon in 2028, will be able to drill the ground and travel over 300 miles, Evgeny Slyuta, Head of the Geochemistry Laboratory of the Moon and Planets at Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry, which is developing the vehicle, told Sputnik.

One of the main tasks of the vehicle is to be able "to drill holes which are [up] to six meters [almost 20 feet] deep," according to the scientist.

"All samples will be delivered later to Earth. The length of the route [the lunar rover is due to cover] is 500 kilometers [310 miles]," Slyuta said.

According to the head of the laboratory, the lunar rover will join the work at interplanetary station Luna-29 on the Moon.

Earlier in May, a space industry source told Sputnik said that the rover would be controlled by an anthropomorphic robot.

Another source in the space industry said that the Luna-29 spacecraft with a 1.3-tonne lunar rover is planned to be launched from Russia's Vostochny cosmodrome using the Angara-A5B launch vehicle with the oxygen-hydrogen booster.
