Trump 'Pushed' Congress to Begin Impeachment Inquiry - US Lawmaker

US lawmakers have no choice but to begin impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump after the White House directed one of its former lawyers to defy a subpoena to testify before the House Judiciary Committee, Congressman Mark Pocan said on Tuesday

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st May, 2019) US lawmakers have no choice but to begin impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump after the White House directed one of its former lawyers to defy a subpoena to testify before the House Judiciary Committee, Congressman Mark Pocan said on Tuesday .

"Regrettably, the President's most recent actions and continued disrespect for the Constitution are forcing us down the road to impeachment," Pocan said in a statement. "Stonewalling Congress on witnesses and the unredacted Mueller report only enhances the President's appearance of guilt, and as a result, he has pushed Congress to a point where we must start an impeachment inquiry."

The House Judiciary Committee last month subpoenaed former White House Counsel Don McGahn to appear on Tuesday to testify about Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation.

But the White House directed McGahn to ignore the subpoena, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said on Monday. McGahn did not appear at Tuesday's House hearing.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler said last week that he was prepared to have a vote on whether to hold McGahn in contempt of Congress should he not show up for testimony.

Mueller's report, which was released in April, concluded that Russia interfered in the 2016 election but said there was no evidence of collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign. Moscow has repeatedly denied interfering in US politics and said Mueller's report provides no evidence to support allegations of Russian election meddling.
