Opposition In Abkhazia Calls For President's Resignation

SUKHUM (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st May, 2019) Opposition protesters in Abkhazia's capital of Sukhum on Monday called on the Caucasus republic's president, Raul Khajimba, to stand down, a Sputnik correspondent reported.

"The president said in a televised announcement he would not meet the protesters. We demand his resignation," Teimuraz Khishba, the chief of the Nationwide Movement for the Protection of Statehood's main office, said.

The rally was called after opposition candidate Aslan Bzhanii was admitted to a Moscow clinic last month with suspected mercury poisoning. He is in grave condition.

The opposition has demanded pushing back the parliamentary elections to fall. The demonstration attracted opponents of the vote delay who held a rival rally in the city center, leading to clashes.
