Arab League to Hold Urgent Summit in Mecca on May 30

The League of Arab States (LAS) has sent invitations to the leaders of the organization's member states to attend an extraordinary summit on May 30 in Saudi Arabia's Mecca to discuss the situation in the Persian Gulf in the wake of the recent attacks on oil facilities in the region, the pan-Arab organization said

CAIRO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th May, 2019) The League of Arab States (LAS) has sent invitations to the leaders of the organization's member states to attend an extraordinary summit on May 30 in Saudi Arabia's Mecca to discuss the situation in the Persian Gulf in the wake of the recent attacks on oil facilities in the region, the pan-Arab organization said.

"The Arab League Secretariat sent invitations on behalf of the king of Saudi Arabia to Arab leaders to attend the extraordinary summit in Mecca on Thursday, May 30, 2019," the statement said.

According to the statement, the summit will focus on the recent attacks on oil tankers in the territorial waters of the United Arab Emirates, as well as drone attacks by Yemeni Houthi rebels against a Saudi oil pipeline.

The Arab League believes that these incidents will have "dangerous consequences for peace and security in the region and the world, as well as for oil supplies and global oil markets."

On Sunday, Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud urged the leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Arab League to gather for extraordinary summits in the city of Mecca on May 30 to discuss the consequences of these developments.

On May 12, four oil tankers, including two Saudi vessels and a UAE-flagged ship, were targeted by a mysterious sabotage attack off the UAE coast. Just a few days later, Yemeni Houthi rebels carried out drone attacks against a Saudi oil pipeline, causing fire and minor damage to the facility.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack on the oil tankers yet, but the United States, which has boosted its military presence in the Persian Gulf amid increased tensions with Tehran, reportedly believes that Iran might have orchestrated the sabotage.
