SDF Militia Members Kill 2 Protesting Refugees in Syria's Hasakah Province - Reports

DAMASCUS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 15th May, 2019) Two people died during riot control actions by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in a refugee camp in northeastern Syria, local television reported on Wednesday.

The two civilians were shot dead as the protests against SDF were suppressed in al-Arishah camp, the Ikhbariya channel reported.

In a series of military operations, the US-backed Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) gained control over the northeastern parts of Syria, including the Hasakah province where al-Arishah is located.

The camp in Arishah, also known as al-Sadd, is one of the biggest centers for internally displaced people (IDP) and currently accommodates some 6,000 residents. As in most camps in SDF-controlled territories, the conditions are dire. Al-Arishah lacks food and healthcare, residents have to drink and wash in contaminated, toxic water as the campground was previously a hub for crude oil refinement.

In a letter to the UN Secretary General on Monday, Syria's Foreign Ministry slammed the SDF as "terrorists" and urged to stop them from assaulting civilians and destroying the infrastructure. Damascus also reported multiple protest movements against the SDF and Kurdish militia in the eastern parts of the country.

The armed conflict in Syria, in its eighth year now, left a progressively growing toll of over 5 million refugees and 6 million IDPs. In some parts of Syria military operations continue, but priority is now given to political settlement.
