Demand to Set Up Interim Government in Afghanistan Has No legal Basis - President's Office

The demand of several Afghan presidential candidates to establish a temporary government has no legal basis, Haroon Chakhansuri, the spokesperson to the president of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, said Tuesday

KABUL (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th May, 2019) The demand of several Afghan presidential candidates to establish a temporary government has no legal basis, Haroon Chakhansuri, the spokesperson to the president of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, said Tuesday.

At least 12 out of 18 Afghan presidential candidates reportedly suggested on Monday that a temporary government should be set up after May 22, when the current term of the government runs out. Presidential elections were initially scheduled for April 20, but were then rescheduled twice. According to the candidates, President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah can head the caretaker government as long as they do not run in the election.

"Afghan Presidential Palace, in reaction to demand of some Presidential candidates, says there is no legal justification for Interim government set-up and there is even no legal mechanism for any demands of the candidates," the spokesman said in a statement.

The presidential palace stressed that "all political parties have the right to hold protests while considering the rule-of-law."

At the moment, the presidential election is scheduled for September 28.
