SC allows Meesha Shafi’s team to cross-examine Ali Zafar’s witnesses in defamation case

Suspending the LHC order that restricted Meesha’s counsel from cross-examining the witnesses, the Supreme Court provided relief to the singer.

Lahore (Pakistan Point News – 14th May, 2019) The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed model and singer Meesha Shafi’s legal team to cross-examine witnesses presented by Ali Zafar in the defemation case.

Suspending the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) order that restricted Meesha’s counsel from cross-examining the witnesses, the Supreme Court provided relief to the singer.

A two-member Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Mushir Alam held the hearing of the case on Tuesday.

The apex court directed Ali Zafar’s counsel to submit affidavits of the remaining witnesses within seven days, following which Meesha’s counsel will be allowed to cross-examine the nine witnesses at the same time.

If Ali Zafar remains unable to present his witnesses, the cross-examination will be done the next day.

The counsel should try their best to cross-examine all witnesses on the same day, the court said.

The Supreme Court also restricted both parties from filing unnecessary applications.

Meesha Shafi had filed a petition in the Supreme Court in April after the rejection of her petition by the LHC to have the statements of Zafar's witnesses recorded and their cross-examination conducted in separate hearings, instead of turn-by-turn examination.

In April 2018, Meesha Shafi had accused Zafar of harassing her on more than one occasion.

This case is first of its nature which has been filed in the Supreme Court.
