Sudan's TMC, Opposition Forces Agree On Structure Of Transitional Bodies - Official

CAIRO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th May, 2019) The ruling Sudanese Transitional Military Council (TMC) and opposition Forces for the Declaration of Freedom and Change have agreed on the structure of transitional bodies, the Sudanese military's spokesman said on Monday.

Earlier in the day, TMC and protesters resumed negotiations after several failures to reach agreement over the future of Sudan in the transitional period.

"We have discussed the structure of the transitional authorities and have reached a full understanding," the representative said as quoted by Al Arabiya tv channel.

According to the broadcaster, the sides have managed to come to terms upon the structures and functions of the supreme, executive and legislative authorities in the transitional period. Representation in future government bodies will be discussed during the talks on Tuesday.

Previously, the TMC did not agree with some of the opposition's proposals over the transitional period. The military did not agree to subordinate the army and security forces to the political leadership. They also did not agree to make the security of the country the civil government's responsibility. In addition, while the TMC wanted the transition period to last for two years, while the opposition insisted on four years.

Sudan experienced a military coup on April 11 following four months of anti-government protests. President Omar Bashir, who had been in power for 30 years, was overthrown and then imprisoned. The TMC came to power and pledged to hold a new election within two years. However, the opposition did not approve this plan and called on the TMC to immediately hand over power to civilian structures.
