Greek Tsipras-Led Gov't Wins Confidence Vote Weeks Before European Parliament Elections

ATHENS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th May, 2019) The government led by Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras won a confidence vote on Friday, about two weeks ahead of the landmark European Parliament elections.

The government of Tsipras won the vote 153-136 following a heated debate which lasted three days in the parliament.

The decision to hold such a debate was made by the parliament's speakers after the opposition conservative New Democracy (ND) party's leader, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, called for a censure motion against Alternate Health Minister Pavlos Polakis.

The latter earlier drew criticism for allegedly accusing a wheelchair-bound ND European Parliament candidate, Stelios Kympouropoulos, of using affirmative action laws to obtain a public sector job. Polakis, who repeatedly draws ire from opposition lawmakers, insists that he has not insulted Kympouropoulos.

This month, Europe is bracing for the landmark European Union's parliamentary elections that will take place on May 23-26. All adult citizens of the bloc are due to select those who are to represent them in the European Parliament.
