The Libyan Coast Guard rescued 213 undocumented migrants in the Mediterranean in two rescue operations off the coastal town of Zliten, Libyan Navy spokesman Ayoub Qasim said on Friday

TRIPOLI (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th May, 2019) The Libyan Coast Guard rescued 213 undocumented migrants in the Mediterranean in two rescue operations off the coastal town of Zliten, Libyan Navy spokesman Ayoub Qasim said on Friday.

"The operation to rescue all migrants who were aboard a rubber boat was conducted, there were 107 migrants, including 88 men, 12 women and seven children," Qasim said in a statement.

During the second operation, 106 men were rescued, he added.

According to the statement, undocumented migrants come from Cameroon, Senegal, Ghana, Mali and Bangladesh. After receiving humanitarian and medical assistance, they were transferred to the authority in charge of combating illegal migration.

Libya is one of the main transit countries for migrants. According to UN figures, the vast majority of migrants, about 90 percent, who cross the Mediterranean to Europe depart from Libya. The civil war in Libya, as well as the unstable situation in the region, have brought the humanitarian situation in the country to a critical state.
