KABUL (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 08th May, 2019) The office of the Counterpart International in Afghanistan, funded by the United States Agency for International Development, was the target of the explosion that hit central Kabul on Wednesday, an Interior Ministry spokesman told Sputnik.

Earlier in the day, media reported that a powerful explosion has occurred in the Shahr-e-Naw area of Kabul. Gunfire is ongoing near the Attorney General's Office in the same district, media added, citing eyewitnesses.

The Interior Ministry's representative, Nasrat Rahimi, told Sputnik that the blast itself took place near the Attorney General's Office and the front door of the Counterpart International development organization in the same district.

It is believed that the attack was started by suicide bombers, which was followed by shooting. Then, the rest of the attackers entered the targeted building.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack, according to the group's spokesman.
