Afghan Officials Preparing List of Taliban Prisoners to Be Released - Gov't Sources

KABUL (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 08th May, 2019) Afghan National Security Adviser Hamdullah Mohib, and other officials are preparing a list of Taliban prisoners who will be released from Bagram and Pul-i-Charkhi prisons, respectively located in the provinces of Parwan and Kabul, sources in the Afghan government told Sputnik on Wednesday.

The decision was made in accordance with a resolution of the four-day Grand National Assembly, known as Loya Jirga, where over 3,000 representatives from Afghanistan have demanded that the government release Taliban prisoners as part of a push for peace, according to the sources.

Addressing the closing ceremony of the Loya Jirga, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said that he would release 175 prisoners.

This happened after the Taliban and Washington had resumed their peace talks in Qatar.

The Taliban did not comment on the release of their prisoners and instead criticized the assembly as being illegitimate.

Afghanistan has long been in a state of turmoil, with the government fighting the Taliban movement, which controls vast territories in rural areas and regularly launches offensives across the country. The situation has been exacerbated by the activities of the Islamic State terrorist group (banned in Russia), which has been operating in Afghanistan since 2015.
